In the midst of most serious violence on the streets of Athens for more than a year, the Greek Prime Minister, George Papandreou has said he will form a new Government and seek a vote of confidence today. The demonstrators across the country have been protesting against new austerity measures the Socialist Government is trying to impose as a condition for a new bail-out by the European Union. Mr. Papandreou had offered to stand down if a new Unity Government could be created but they failed.
