Govt's urban renewal programme, Smart Cities Mission transforms face of Hubballi Dharwad city in Karnataka

The Government's urban renewal programme, Smart Cities Mission has transformed the face of Hubballi Dharwad city in Karnataka. From the redevelopment of Tolankere Lake to the development of Green Mobility Corridor and Janata Bazar, the project has made the city more people-friendly and sustainable. The Tolankere Lake is one of the important open spaces and the second largest lake in Hubballi Dharwad. Under the Smart City project, the lake has been transformed by Hubballi Dharwad Smart City Limited (HDSCL) at a cost of 25 crore rupees. A report
''
''Tolankere was a dying water body with hardly any marine life but now it has become the most loved community space in the city. There was excessive silt collection and very little water-holding capacity in the area. After desilting the lake bed, two artificial islands have been created along with three storm water channels connected to drain into the lake to provide a continuous source of water. Talking to Akashwani News, Managing Director of HDSCL, Rudresh Ghali highlights that specific trees have been planted to attract birds, bees and butterflies in this lake. He said the lake's surroundings offer amenities for all age groups including walkways, a children's play area, an amphitheatre, a meditation area, watch towers, and a parking facility.
''
''Today the place has emerged as a stunning haven for flora, fauna and migratory birds. Since its opening, over 500 people visit it during the weekdays and the number swells to 1500 on weekends. It has also become the starting or ending point of every public awareness of fitness rallies held in the city. Diwaker for Parikrama, Hubbali.
