Union Law Ministry has written to the Chief Justices of all high courts, asking them to expedite cases of corruption and serious crimes against sitting MLAs and MPs.
The government's move is line with a Supreme Court order and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promise of clean politics.
In March this year, the Court had directed that trial proceedings in cases of corruption and serious crimes against elected representatives must be completed within a year.
The Centre was tasked with ensuring that the hearings are fast-tracked.
It has also decided to write all states to expedite trials of cases pending against MPs and MLAs facing charges which attract disqualification.
Any sentence which attracts punishment of two years and above can lead to disqualification from Parliament or state legislature.
