The government today said it is working on a mission to develop cotton with superior fibre quality. Replying to supplementaries in the Rajya Sabha, the Agriculture minister Mr Sharad Pawar said the government is also taking several measures for enhancing cotton production by providing incentives to farmers for procuring seeds and water saving devices besides other things. Mr Pawar informed the House the government has been implementing Technology Mission on Cotton in 13 states since 2000. He said Gujarat produced 105 lakh bales of cotton out of a total production of over 334 lakh bales in the country. The minister said during the 11th plan the government has allotted over 690 crore rupees for cotton production. Mr Pawar said All India Coordinated Cotton Improvement Project of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research is already under operation at Surat to boost cotton production.
