Government is working towards evolving a consensus among all stakeholders on the sharing of waters with Bangladesh. External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said that water is a sensitive issue in both countries and the government is keen to arrive at a fair and equitable arrangements.
Mr Krishna was giving a suo moto statement in the Lok Sabha on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's two-day visit to Dhaka. It is reported that the two countries were unable to sign an accord on the Teesta water after West Bengal Chief Minister expressed her apprehensions over the deal.
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had said that provincial sentiments cannot be wished away and concerns of all regions will be addressed before signing any international agreement. Dr Singh had on Wednesday said that government will continue to discuss the matter with Mamata Banerjee.
Giving details of the 2-day visit to Bangladesh, Mr Krishna said that during the Prime Minister's visit to Bangladesh, the two countries renewed their commitment to promote trade investment and economic cooperation for a strong bilateral partnership.
The External Affairs Minister that historic agreements were signed, which mark a watershed in the bilateral relations.
He said the agreements include demarcation of land boundary between the two countries and related matters and framework agreement on cooperation for development.
Mr Krishna, while hailing the cooperation of Bangladesh in tracking insurgency and terrorism, said intensive discussions were held on finalising an extradition treaty between the two countries. Altogether 10 pacts were signed during the Prime Minister's visit.
