The government today withdrew with immediate effect the permissible limit on sending bulk SMSes and MMSes. The restrictions were imposed by the Home ministry on the 17th of this month following reports that threatening SMSes were being sent to the from the Northeast in some states. The measure was aimed at checking the spread of rumours creating panic among the northeasterners in cities like Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

AIR correspondent reports, the restrictions on sending more than five SMSes in one go and more than 20 Kilo bytes, KB, of data through mobile phones was put in place for 15 days till tomorrow. The government increased the number of SMSes to 20 per day last Friday.
