Government has withdrawn the deemed university status granted to the National School of Drama in 2005 with immediate effect. The Ministry of Human Resource Development has said that NSD failed to fulfill the conditions stipulated for the Deemed University status.

According to an official release, NSD also wanted the deemed university status to be de notified as it adversely affected the academic and administrative autonomy of the institute and undermined the professional training and flexibility required in the creative field like theatre.
