Govt-ULFA signs agreement to suspend operation in Assam

A tripartite agreement for Suspension of Operations against United Liberation Front of Assam, ULFA was signed on Saturday in New Delhi with an objective to bring peace in the north-eastern state of Assam.

The agreement was signed among the representatives of Central and Assam governments and ULFA leaders. As per the agreement, the outfit will not carry out any subversive activities till the finding of a political solution to the vexed insurgency problem while the security forces will also not take any action against the ULFA cadres. The pact will continue during the political talks and till a final agreement is signed.

The Central government was represented by the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Sambhu Singh while Government of Assam was represented by the Home Commissioner and Addl. Director General of Police.

Terming the talks with ULFA leaders a positive one, Mr Sambhu Singh said that the first round spells out the road to political dialogue. ULFA had earlier agreed to abjure violence and find a solution to the problems as perceived by them through peaceful negotiations with the Government of India and Government of Assam.
