Govt to use ‘satellite imagery’ for identifying illegal mining locations

The government has decided to take help of Satellite imagery for identifying illegal mining locations, especially in Orrisa and other parts of country. <br/><br/>After reviewing the action taken on measures taken to curb illegal Mining, Minister of Mines Mr. B K Handique said, the joint efforts of Indian Bureau of Mines and ISRO using satellite imagery will help in curbing illegal mining. <br/><br/>The Minister directed to develop a special scheme for developing capacity in the State Governments for using Satellite imagery for curbing illegal mining.<br/><br/>A committee headed by Secretary of Mines in each State with officials from Land Revenue Department, Regional Remote Sensing Centers and IBM would be constituted to enable states governments to implement this facility. <br/><br/>Earlier, Indian Bureau of Mines used the satellite imagery to zero in on the illegal mining areas located in dense forested areas of Orrisa, and took action by suspending mining activity of 8 mine owners.
