Govt. to unveil National Disaster Management policy soon

The government will soon unveil the national Disaster Management Policy. This was stated by the Home Secretary, Mr. G.K. Pillai while addressing the second India Disaster Management Congress which began in New Delhi today. Earlier, the Vice Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority, Gen. N.C. Vij said 1,34,000 engineers and architects will be trained during the next five years for ensuring that Disaster Resilient Technology and knowledge is put to use at the ground level. He said, a Rs. 10,000 crore plan is also being formulated for revamping the Indian Meteorological Department so that information provided by it could be used for effective handling of natural calamities. The three day Congress is deliberating on a number of themes and disciplines related to disasters management. More than 1500 scientists, scholars working on different aspects of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management from across the world are taking part in the meet. The South Asian Disaster Knowledge Network, an online information system for disaster management in the region was also launched during the inaugural session today. AIR correspondent says that the portal will act a common platform for knowledge sharing among SAARC countries on major natural calamities.
