Govt to take strict action against those involved in malpractices for conduct of CWG

The government today assured the Rajya Sabha that strict action will be taken against those found involved in malpractices for the conduct of the Commonwealth Games. Replying to a volley of questions, Sports Minister Dr M S Gill said that the government and the nation is worried over alleged reports of corruption in the Games projects. He informed the House that Central Vigilance Commission, CVC, who selected seven games sites, has said in its observations that the works have been awarded at higher rates, besides poor site management and quality compromises. The minister informed that CVC also said that work has been allotted to non eligible companies and there are poor quality assurances. Dr Gill said many observations of the CVC have been rectified. The minister informed that the Prime Minister will be visiting some of the sites next week to have on the spot assessment of the situation.AIR correspondent reports the Prime Minister last week held a high level meeting to review the preparedness for the Games. Dr Manmohan Singh constituted a Group of Ministers headed by urban development minister S Jaipal Reddy which is monitoring the progress on a daily basis. The committee of secretaries headed by Cabinet secretary K M Chandrasekhar has also been assigned to oversee the functions of the Organising committee of the CWG.
