Govt to soon table new bill addressing concerns of immigrant labour, students

Government will soon introduce a new Immigration Bill to address all concerns of immigrant labour and students. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj informed the Lok Sabha today that the present Immigration Regulation Act, 1983 is outdated in the context of the changing scenario. She said low skilled, semi skilled and highly skilled labourers do not come under the ambit of the law. <br/><br/>She said it is necessary to replace the existing law by new one. Replying to a question, Mrs. Swaraj said human trafficking is a big issue and government had taken serious concern over it. <br/><br/>Referring to a domestic maid whose left hand has been chopped by his employer in Saudi Arabia, the Minister said with all commitment, government has expressed serious concern over exploitation of Indian labourers specifically women. <br/><br/>She informed the House that on the basis of victim Kasturi Maniratnam's statement, New Delhi is still in touch with Saudi government on this matter.
