Govt to set up natonal committee to rekindle public interest in Tagore

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today said the events to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindra Nath Tagore will befit the legacy of the Nobel laureate and would rekindle public interest in the works of one of the world's foremost cultural personalities,<br/>He was speking after inaugurating a specially curated exhibition<br/>The Master's Strokes- Art of Rabindra Nath Tagore' at the<br/>National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi. Dr Singh said India would organise a grand exhibition of his paintings in Paris next<br/>year to commemorate his birth anniversary. The prime minister said that the government had already set up a national committee with several senior ministers, state chief ministers and many eminent scholars, experts and others. He said the committee would suggest, formulate and plan a number of events that would rekindle public interest in Gurudev's rich cultural legacy and in his thoughts, ideals, teachings and values. He also informed an Implementation Committee headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has been set up to work out operational details of the proposed celebrations and to ensure that the commemoration was really a befitting one. <br/>Noting that Tagore's genius as a poet, dramatist,<br/>philosopher, educationist and composer won him universal<br/>acclaim, the Prime Minister said his genius as a painter was,<br/>however, less well known. Dr Singh said Rabindra Nath Tagore's work displayed a superb sense of rhythm and vitality<br/>and his techniques matched his highly developed and refined<br/>creative expression.<br/>Meanwhile, in West Bengal various programs have been organised to pay respect to Gurudev Tegore. The day begun with musical soirees, probhat ferry and garlanding of statues and portraits of Tagore. AIR Kolkata Correspondent reports that streams of people have converged at Jorosanko Thakurbari-the birth place of Rabindra Nath. A fortnight long program organised by the State Government also began at Rabindra Sadan at Central Kolkata this morning. Railway Minister Mamata Banarjee will flag off an exhibition train at Howrah Station in Kolkata this afternoon depicting different aspects of the life and works of Tagore. The train will travel all over the country for a year to spread Tagore’s philosophy.<br/> <br/>
