Aiming to do away with multiple entrance tests and reducing burden on students, the Government has decided to set up a committee to suggest a suitable entrance model for engineering examinations. A decision to this effect was taken at the IIT Council meeting chaired by Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal. He told reporters after the meeting that the committee under the Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, T Ramasami will prepare a detailed framework which will decide about the kind of test and the methodology of selecting students for IITs, NITs and other engineering institutes. It will submit its report in three months. Giving details of the other decisions, Mr. Sibal said that the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology will now offer courses in medicine and allow foreign nationals on permanent faculty positions and students from abroad at the post graduate level. He said, the decisions are being taken to bring IITs at par with the international institutes. The Minister said, the number of foreign students will be limited to 25 percent and only for the post graduate courses. For the faculty, Mr Sibal said that consultations will be held with the Home Ministry to decide the modalities. The total number of foreign faculty will be capped at 10 percent. The Minister also informed that these admissions will not affect the present number of Indian students in the institutes. The minister said that medicine and medical research will be added to the field of IITs. He said, the decision was taken as the field of medicine involves large number of engineering techniques. He clarified that while MCI approval will be needed for awarding medical degrees, it will not be needed for the research in the allied fields related to medical technology.
