The Government has decided to replace all the 25-year-old power plants to ensure enhanced power generation in the country. Replying to a discussion on the working of the Power Ministry in the Rajya Sabha today, the Minister of State for Power Piyush Goyal asked the states to make concerted efforts to address the perennial problem of power shortage. Stating that steady supply of coal to power plants is a contentious issue before the government, the Minister said, the country
needs a planned freight system to ensure round-the-clock coal supplies. Referring to the supply-demand gap of coal production in the country, the Minister said the existing environmental laws are coming in the way of extracting required quantities. In this context, the Minister underlined the need for reviewing the relevant laws.
