The Government has decided to rehabilitate and resettle ten thousand families living in the Dal-Nigeen Lake in Srinagar at a cost of 486 crore rupees as it was necessary for eco-regeneration of the lake. The decision was taken in the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in New Delhi this evening. The entire cost of the exercise will be borne by the State Government. During the visit of the Prime Minister to Jammu and Kashmir in 2009, additional central assistance of more than 350 crore rupees was announced for the rehabilitation of Dal dwellers.Subsequently, Planning Commission conveyed it’s in principle approval of this proposal and decided that the project at an estimated cost of 356 crore rupees will be funded by the Central Government under Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Plan for the state.
