Government is confident of mopping up 4.3 trillion rupees as direct taxes in the current fiscal. Chairman Central Board of Direct Taxes S.S.N. Moorthy said in New Delhi today the first quarter the direct tax collection grew by 15.7 percent. He said that government was in the process of widening tax base and reducing rates. According to official data, contribution of direct taxes to India's gross domestic product increased from 1.9 percent in 1999-2000 to 6.1 percent in 2009-10.
