Govt to provide housing in less than Rs 5 lakh: Gadkari

Government is committed to offer affordable houses below rupees 5 lakh, said Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. He was addressing Assocham's 'Smart City' summit in Delhi today. If we make available houses at a cost below rupees 5 lakh, 30 per cent people can buy that, said Gadkari. He said apart from focus on building smart cities, providing affordable houses to the poorest of the poor also tops the agenda of the Narendra Modi government. <br/><br/>An experimental venture in Nagpur in which houses are built on steel structure using 70 per cent fly ash, will be inaugurated on February 20. Minister said that construction cost of such building comes at rupees 1000 per square feet. At that rate 450 square feet house can be built in 5 lakh rupees.<br/><br/> Minister added that government will provide subsidy of rupees 1.5 lakh so that cost of house will be rupees 3.5 lakh. He further said, loan with interest rate of 7 to 7.5 per cent will be provided so that even a poor can buy that. Currently only one per cent of population can buy houses above rupees 10 lakh.
