The Government is committed to provide food security to the common people and the proposed Food Security Bill is an excellent move in this direction.
The Bill has provision of endowing a legal right up to 75 per cent of rural population and 50 per cent of urban population to provides mandatory supply of food grains at subsidized rates. Addressing a Conclave in New Delhi today, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister, Prof. K.V. Thomas said the government recent initiative of bringing green revolution to the eastern part of the country has been a success.
He said the Budget has also sought to increase the allocation for this scheme. Highlighting the initiatives taken by his ministry to create more storage in the country, Prof.
Thomas said that center has formulated a scheme for Construction of godowns under Public Private Partnership mode. He said a capacity of about 150 lakh tonnes is being created under the scheme through private entrepreneurs and central and state Warehousing Corporations.
