Govt.to lay Librahan Report with ATR in current session,Parliament adjourned amidst uproar

The alleged leakage of the Liberhans Commission report on the disputed structure at Ayodhya today rocked both Houses of Parliament. The two Houses were adjourned twice, first till noon and later upto 2 PM over the issue.

The government for its part assured both the Houses that the repot along with Action Taken Report (ATR) will be tabled during the current session of the Parliament. Responding to the opposition demand for tabling of the report in the Lok Sabha, the Home Minister, Mr. P Chidambaram strongly denied that the report has been leaked to media by any one in his ministry. He also refused to say whether whatever has been reported in the media is correct or not. Making a brief statement in the Rajya Sabha, later, Mr. Chidambaram reiterated the government's decision to table the report in the current session. Explaining the delay in presenting the report, the Home Minister said that 17th volume report has to be translated into Hindi along with the Action Taken Report. Earlier, as soon as the Lok Sabha house assembled for the day, the members, led by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. L K Advani, demanded immediate tabling of the report alleging that the leakage is a breach of the privilege of the House. Mr. Advani alleged that one of the national news dailies has carried parts of the report, indicting senior BJP leaders, including the former Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He said he was shocked to see the report. Mr. Advani said that he had stated before the Commission that the demolition of the structure was the saddest day of his life. He, however, said that he was proud of the Ayodhya movement and wants a grand temple to be built at the site. Leaders of the other opposition parties including the CPIM, SP, BJD and BSP also demanded the immediate tabling of the report. However, even after the Home Minister's assurance, the BJP members trooped into the well of the House shouting slogans and the Speaker adjourned the House till noon. When the House reassembled, the BJP members continued to raise their pitch even as some papers were laid and a Bill was introduced. In the Rajya Sabha also, opposition leaders from various parties, demanded the tabling of the report. They wanted the alleged leakage of the report to be inquired into. Following noisy scenes, the House was adjourned for 45 minutes. When the House reassembled despite the statement by the Home Minister, BJP members kept on shouting slogans and the house was adjourned for the second time till 2 PM.

BJP and Congress today clashed over the findings of the Liberhan Commission, which is alleged to have indicted senior BJP leaders Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, among others, for the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992. According to a newspaper report, Justice M S Liberhan, who submitted his findings to the government on June 30, this year after an inquiry lasting nearly 17 years, has called the BJP leaders pseudo-moderates and stated that the entire build-up to the demolition was meticulously planned.

However, Justice Liberhan, has declined to comment on the newspaper report. He said the report is with the Parliament and he had not said anything to anybody. Accusing the government of selectively leaking the report to one newspaper, BJP spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy said this has been done to divert attention from core issues like price rise and corruption. He said, there is no authenticity of the report and why the government is shying away from tabling the Liberhan report in Parliament. Mr. Rudy alleged that the move is aimed at creating turmoil in Parliament and across the nation. Mr. Murli Manohar Joshi said, this is a leakage and such leakages are, with a political motive. He said the best thing is that the government should place the entire report in Parliament with action taken report.

Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said that for nearly two decades, the nation as a whole generally knew what had happened and how senior functionaries of a political party watched people causing destruction and mayhem and then shed crocodile tears.

BJP leader Venkaiah Yaidu has alleged that the government has leaked the confidential Liberhan Committee report. Talking to reporters outside the Parliament, Mr. Naidu demanded the report to be tabled in Parliament along with the action taken report. Defending the senior party leaders whose name figured in media reports, Mr.Naidu alleged that the government is trying to divert public attention from critical issues.
