Govt. to introduce new defence production policy with a motive to improve self-reliance

Government today said it will come out with a new defence production policy in the next two months with an intention to improve self-reliance on defence production.<br/><br/>Addressing media persons in New Delhi today, Defence Production Secretary, Mr. R.K. Singh said that under the new policy, domestic industries will get orders for products developed by them after indigenous research.<br/><br/>The move comes in the backdrop of reluctance on part of Indian companies to get into the sector due to high R&D costs and uncertainty over orders from the armed forces. He said, Indian Armed Forces should get the best system available in the world and all Indian industries bidding for the same tender for products will be given the orders in a sharing formula. Mr. Singh said, the government has to combine transparenty and equity in the defence production policy.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, the Defence Minister Mr. AK Antony will inaugurate the 6th Defence Expo at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi on Monday. This was announced by Defence Production Secretary RK Singh at a Press Conference in New Delhi, today. He said the four-day event will be the largest ever Defence Exposition in Asia and will showcase India’s emergence as an attractive destination for investment in the Defence Sector and act as a platform for alliances and joint ventures in Defence industry. Mr. Singh said 650 companies from over 35 countries would display weapon systems for Army and Navy. <br/><br/>Major participants are from USA, UK, Russia, Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Korea, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, Germany, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Israel Italy, Malaysia and South Africa. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports,organised by the Department of Defence Production, the exhibition will continue till February 18th. The Def Expo also offers an opportunity to the international defence industry to promote and showcase their products and services.
