Govt to install mobile radiation detection systems in Police vehicles

The government has decided to install mobile radiation detection systems in Police vehicles of selected police station of major cities in the country.

The Radiation Detection Systems installed in a mobile platform will have the capability to search and detect gamma emitting radio nuclides.

This was informed by the minister of state in the Prime Minister Office Mr V Narayansamy in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today. He said that more than 800 police stations will be provided the vehicles having the radiation detection system.

The Minister said that technical support from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, BARC has been taken in this connection.

Mr Narayansamy said that the aim is to help the police forces to detect any inadvertent presence of radioactivity in public domain. It will also act as a deterrent for unauthorised usage of radioactive materials.
