Govt to implement BS-VI emission norms by April 1, 2020: Nitin Gadkar

The government today decided to implement Bharat Stage, BS VI emission norms from 1st of April 2020 by skipping BS-V altogether in a bid to curb vehicular pollution. Bharat stage are emission standards instituted by the Government to regulate the output of air pollutants from internal combustion engine equipment including motor vehicles. <br/><br/>At present, BS-IV auto fuels are being supplied in whole of northern India covering Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, parts of Rajasthan and western UP. The remaining parts of the country are scheduled to be covered under it by April 1, 2017. <br/><br/>Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said, earlier the government had decided to implement the BS VI norms by 2021 but now it is being advanced by one year. He said, due to the revised norms the Petroleum Ministry will have to incur an expenditure of 30 thousand crore rupees on reforming the oil refineries.<br/><br/>The decision to shift directly from BS-IV to BS-VI Emission norm was taken at an inter-ministerial meeting chaired by Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. The meeting was attended by Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Heavy Industries Minister Anant Geete and Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar.

Govt to implement BS-VI emission norms by April 1, 2020: Nitin Gadkar

The government today decided to implement stricter emission norms of Bharat Stage, BS VI from April 1st 2020 in a bid to curb vehicular pollution. The decision was taken at an inter-ministerial meeting chaired by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. <br/><br/>The meeting was also attended by Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Heavy Industries Minister Anant Geete and Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar. Speaking to News Agency PTI, Mr Gadkari said, it was decided to leapfrog from BS-IV to BS-VI directly. He said, it is a bold decision and a commitment to environment. He added that all the other ministries have assured cooperation to make the implementation successful. <br/><br/>At the end of December, Mr Pradhan had stated that India would go straight from Euro-IV complaint petrol and diesel to Euro-VI fuel by 2020.<br/>Earlier, a meeting of an inter-ministerial group, including representatives of Ministries of Road Transport and Highways, Petroleum, Heavy Industries and Environment and Forests, was unable to reach a consensus. <br/><br/>The road transport and highways ministry was of the view the roll out of BS-V norms must start from 2019 but Petroleum Ministry expressed inability to comply with the deadline.<br/>At present, BS-IV auto fuels are being supplied in whole of northern India covering Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, parts of Rajasthan and western UP. The rest of the country has BS-III grade fuel.<br/><br/>Bharat stage emission standards are emission standards instituted by the Government of India to regulate the output of air pollutants from internal combustion engine equipment, including motor vehicles.
