The Directorate General of Civil Aviation – DGCA has called top executives of all Indian carriers for a meeting tomorrow, asking them to explain why they have proposed such high fares.Full-service carriers– Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines– will participate in the meeting. SpiceJet, GoAir and IndiGo officials held discussions with the DGCA yesterday.Addressing a press conference in Mumbai yesterday Union Civil Aviation Minister said air fares that have risen astronomically in the last month will stablise within a week. He said if it is not done the DGCA is empowered to take actions for the benefit of air travellers. Meanwhile,The domestic airlines have reduced the fares after the civil aviation ministry cracked the whip on them for charging exorbitant prices in the last few weeks. According to official estimates the prices have come down between 20 to 25 per cent. Official sources said that pressure mounted on airlines after the Civil Aviation Ministry and Directorate General of Civil Aviation warned them against charging higher prices. The Directorate General Civil Aviation held talks with some private air carriers including Indigo, Spice Jet and Go Air yesterday and will be holding another meeting with Air India, Jet Airways and King Fisher tomorrow.
