The Government will extend all possible help to the garment industry in Tirupur which is facing rough weather after the Madras High Court ordered the closure of over 700 units for not adhering to water pollution norms. Talking to reporters in New Delhi on Tuesday, Textile Secretary Rita Menon said achieving zero water pollution at Tirupur will cost the exchequer about 160 crore rupees and the Centre is open to extend all help. She said the closure of textile units in Tirupur has badly affected garment exports from India.Tirupur is one of the main contributors of India's 11.1 billion US dollar garment exports every year. At least 730 units engaged mainly in dyeing and bleaching have remained shut at Tirupur since January on the orders of the Madras High Court which found them to be polluting the water in the area.
