Govt to fund medal winners’ education

Educational expenses of all Indian medal winners in the Commonwealth Games at New Delhi would be borne by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. It has been announced by Kapil Sibal as a token of appreciation and a gesture towards encouraging sports talent among students of all categories. He has said cost of education would be borne by the Government for the entire duration of their studies. He said while the expenditure for college and University students, including those in professional colleges, would be borne by the University Grants Commission and the Central Board of Secondary Education would bear all such expenditure on education of all those currently in Schools, irrespective of whether they are in CBSE affiliated schools or not. The ministry has directed both CBSE and UGC to work out exact modalities in this regard. The Minister has also advised the UGC and CBSE to formulate suitable schemes of financial incentives to support talented sportspersons among students and to strengthen the sports infrastructure in educational institutions.
