Govt to form National Judicial Appointments Commission to widen judges' appointments process

The Government proposes to establish a National Judicial Appointments Commission with a view to broad-basing the process of appointments of judges in the Supreme Court and High Courts.

Giving this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, the Government proposes to change the existing system for appointment and transfer of judges of the higher judiciary.

In reply to another question, Mr Prasad said a comprehensive proposal was also formulated for the constitution of an All India Judicial Service to strengthen federal governance.

He said the proposal, approved by the Committee of Secretaries in 2012, was included as an agenda item in the Conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of the High Courts held in April 2013.

The Minister said, the views of the state governments and High Courts have been sought again on the proposal.
