The Centre has reiterated full support to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for its capability enhancement. Giving away the DRDO technology awards 2009 in New Delhi today, the Prime Minister said that the government will encourage public-private partnership for greater participation of industries in the defence sector. Dr. Manmohan Singh said that the offset scheme in defence procurement must be utilised to fill the technological gaps in defence capabilities. <br/><br/>Urging the scientists to strive for leadership in research and development in defence technologies, the Prime Minister said that there is no reason why successes achieved in software sector cannot be replicated in the Defence sector. <br/><br/>The Prime Minister observed that the scientists should develop the capacity of making the right technology choices, of ensuring synergy between research and product development and of focusing on critical technologies of the future. He said India is in the forefront of knowledge based industries and the scientists have to harness this strength to meet defence needs of the country. <br/><br/>The Prime Minister noted that Development of advanced technologies is not a one-off event, nor can it be achieved in a day. He said integrated approach to building a broad base of scientific talent, production capacity and a long-term vision are key elements to success. He opined that for this the youth must be motivated and incentives to focus on research activities. <br/> <br/>DRDO awards were given in 13 categories comprising individual and team category. Silicon Trophy 2009 for the Best Systems Laboratory was awarded to the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, Chennai, while Titanium Trophy was given to Hyderabad lab. Individual awards were given to 20 scientists besides team awards in various categories. <br/><br/>
