Govt to do nothing with cash rewards announced by Hockey India: Maken

Sports Minister Ajay Maken on Wednesday said that the Government has nothing to do with the cash reward announced by Hockey India to the Indian team. Responding to queries after the players rejected the cash reward announced by Hockey India for lifting the inaugural Asian Championship Trophy, Mr Maken said that the government spends money on the training and coaching of the players.The team was offered the reward during a felicitation ceremony held at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday evening. The players however, unanimously rejected the reward saying that the paltry amount of 25000 rupees each is not proper recognition of their achievement.AIR Correspondent reports India had won the Asian Champions Trophy by defeating arch-rivals Pakistan 4-2 via shoot out in the summit clash.
