The government has said that a fresh survey will be conducted to ascertain the situation of manual scavengers in the country.

In a joint press statement with the Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Mr Mukul Wasnik said that apart from survey, a draft policy on manual scavenging has been sent to the state governments and other stakeholders for their suggestions.

He said that National Advisory Council and the Prime Minister's Office have also taken up the issue, now raised by Aamir Khan.

Aamir Khan said that Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh gave him a positive response and assured him of proper steps in this direction.
