The government will bring a new Crop Insurance Scheme for the benefit of farmers in the next financial year. Replying to a debate on drought situation in different parts of the country, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said in the Lok Sabha, the government will ensure that the farmers pay less premium for their crop insurance and get timely compensation in case of any crop loss. He also said, a committee will be set up to review the existing agriculture policy to remove the anomalies to make it more effective. <br/><br/>Referring to the drought situation in the country, the Agriculture Minister said, 207 districts in 9 states including Bihar, Odisha, Karnataka, Telangana and Maharashtra are drought -hit. He said, to mitigate the impact of drought, the Centre has already put in place a contingency plan for 600 districts. He also clarified that due to the deficient rainfall in Kharif Season, there was not much impact on foodgrain production. <br/><br/>Radha Mohan Singh said, the government, for the first time in the history, has created buffer stocks of pulses to meet its shortage in future. The Agriculture Minister said, the government has set a target of providing Soil Health Cards to all 13.5 crore farmers across the country by 2017. Mr Singh also informed the House that Soil Health Management in the country is being promoted through setting up of soil and fertilizer testing laboratories.
