The Cabinet has given its approval for the introduction of amendments in the Enemy Property erty Act, 1968. Briefing the media after a Cabinet meeting, the Union Home Minister P.Chidambaram said, fresh amendments, which were placed before Parliament last session will be incorporated in the new bill. AIR correspondent reports that the Bill seeks to empower the government to dispose of properties in India of those who left for Pakistan in 1947. The amendments will have retrospective effect. According to the proposed changes the Enemy Property will continue to vest in the Custodian till it is divested by the Central Government. The Enemy Property can be divested only to the owners or his lawful heir. The court will order divestment from custodian or direct the Central government to divest Enemy Property. The Centre will also be authorised to direct the custodian to sell or dispose off enemy property in the prescribed manner. The transfer of any property will not include any transfer or claim of transfer made through oral will or oral gift or if it has been done without the permission of the competent authority.
