Government will attempt to bring about consensus on Television Rating Points (TRP) regulating mechanism in the country. Speaking to reporters after receiving the report of the committee set up by the ministry to study TRP ratings, information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni said, at present there are only 8,000 people metre homes in the country to evaluate TRP measurement. She said it would be increased to 30,000 in first phase and later to 50,000 over the next few years covering rural areas, small towns, Jammu and Kashmir and North East.The minister said self governance with appropriate transparency and regulation will be followed while generating TRPs. She said the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) has been formed to look into the issue. FICCI general secretary Amit Mitra who headed the committee said the members had several round of meetings and discussions with stakeholders and rating agencies to get an in-depth understanding of the issues plaguing the current TRP system. Mr Mitra said the committee has recommended constitution of a High powered committee within BARC to guide it. Mr Mitra said the composition of the High powered committee would also include individuals from civil society.
