Govt to amend Consumer Protection Act for quick disposal of cases

The Government is to amend the Consumer Protection Act which will provide for quick disposal of cases, online lodging of complaints by consumers and scope for tackling unfair practices.

The Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Prof. K.V Thomas said, this has been recommended by Central Consumer Protection Council, CCPC, in a meeting held today. Prof. Thomas said that the Council also focused its deliberations on misleading advertisements and wastage of food in social functions.

He said, Government will formulate a policy to create an appropriate mechanism to tackle the menace of misleading advertisements.

He informed that the Ministry has decentralised the system of allotment of funds to NGOs for promoting Consumer Welfare Activities.

Prof. Thomas said, each state is being asked to create a corpus fund of Rs 10 crore out of which they can finance the local NGOs for their Consumer related activities.

Prof. Thomas assured that regular meetings of National Councils and State Councils will be convened so that the Consumer can give their feedback and Policy inputs for the Government.
