Govt. to allow private radio stations to air news sourced partially

The government today said that it is planning to allow private radio stations to air news sourced partially from All India Radio news bulletins. Addressing a session on Future of Media at the ongoing India Economic Summit in New Delhi today, the Information & Broadcasting Minister, Mrs. Abmika Soni said that a cabinet note is being prepared in this regard. She said, that private radio stations could be allowed to AIR news capsule using certain portions of All India Radio news bulletin along with other add ons. These could be about local sports events, weather bulletins and employment news. She said, the move could help improve the economic viability of private radio stations. The Minister told reporters that the government is also thinking of increasing the FDI limit in radio sector from the existing 20 per cent to 26 per cent.
