Government will address drawbacks of crop insurance including high premium rate and delay in payment of claims to farmers in the new Crop Insurance Scheme. Sources said the new scheme is expected to come up for approval of the Cabinet on Wednesday. It will be rolled out in the next financial year. <br/><br/>Talking to AIR, Joint Secretary in the Agriculture Ministry, Ashish Bhutani said, in the existing crop insurance scheme farmers' share of premium increases substantially specially where the actuarial premium rates are high. He said there has been instances where farmers had to pay premium upto 15 percent. <br/><br/>Mr. Bhutani said farmers are also agitated over capping of premium rate which leads to lower payments in case of calamity in spite of higher premium rate. He said such loopholes have been examined and government will try its best to plug them.
