Govt to act against banks if rate cut benefits doesn't reach consumers: Jayant Sinha

Minister of state for Finance Jayant Sinha today said that if the banks do not pass on the benefit of reduction in Repo-rates to the consumers, the government may take steps against them. Talking to AIR, Mr Sinha said in a competitive market, once the rates start coming down, few banks will do it and others will have to follow it. He said there are any complaints, one can get in touch with the bank's Ombudsman. The minister also said that there is no competitive behaviour in these markets, as should be and the government will make sure that the market operates efficiently and in a pro-competitive way.Defending the Union Budget, Mr Sinha said in this Budget, the government has enlisted 20 major reforms and it will definitely have a huge impact on the Indian economy in the future. He also said the government has paid adequate attention to the middle class in this budget. Mr Sinha said that fiscal situation is not very good as of now, but as its capacity improves, the government will pass on the tax benefits.
