Union Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water & Sanitation, Choudhary Birender Singh said that the Government has so far built 6 crore toilets in the country. The Drinking Water & Sanitation Ministry has targeted October 2019 as "toilet for every household". Talking to media after the inauguration of one day, "National Consultation on Sanitation Partnership" in Shillong today, Mr. Birender Singh said that different sections of society are being included for Swachchh Bharat Campaign.<br/><br/>Expressing "deep concern" over the 1.30 crore toilets remaining non-functional, he wondered how to bring about a change in the mindset of the people, as merely building toilets won't address the problem of open defecation. He said that the mindset has to change, if we are to succeed in our Swachh Bharat campaign. The Government alone cannot do everything, the people must come forward and be part of the change. <br/><br/>The Union Minister Mr. Birender Singh also informed that northeastern region is in the process of achieving 100 per cent success in the open defecation free programme in next two to three years. He informed that the Centre is providing Rs. 10,800 for the construction of each toilet in the northeast, while this amount is Rs. 9000 for the rest of the country.
