The government is taking active measures to make Hindi one of the official languages in the United Nations. Replying to questions in the Rajya Sabha, External affairs minister S M Krishna said a high level committee under the chairmanship of external affairs minister was constituted in 2003 to look into the issue. He, however, said inclusion of Hindi as an official language in the UN has several financial and procedural implications which require to be met before a formal proposal can be tabled in the UN. Mr. Krishna informed the House that procedurally, the UN General Assembly would need to adopt a resolution by a majority of the 192 member states. The minister also said the efforts are being undertaken with the Non Resident Indians (NRIs) to garner support for greater recognition of Hindi as an international language. Mr. Krishna said the government continues to persevere with its efforts to promote the use of Hindi in the United Nations and outside.
