Govt sourcing large chunk of defence products at home: MoS Def

Government is sourcing a large chunk of defence products at home with its expenditure on domestic procurement accounting for more than 60 percent ofits total expenditure on their purchase. Minister of State for Defence Jitendra Singh said this in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. He said the expenditure on procurement from domestic sources was 604.31 billion rupees in 2012-13 against 949.61 billion rupees, which was the total amount of money spent on defence procurement.Mr. Singh said the government has been making consistent efforts to expand the share of domestic production of defence equipments out of total expenditure on the equipment.He said that the Defence Production Policy promulgated in 2011 aims to achieve substantive self-reliance in design, development and production of equipments, weapon systems and platforms required for defence, by enhancing domestic manufacturingcapabilities.
