The Government is in the final stage of notifying the fuel efficiency standards for automobile sector in the country. Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said it will be enforced from 2011. Speaking at the inaugural session of the two-day 4th Environment Friendly Vehicles (EFV) conference in New Delhi, Mr. Ramesh said the government is right now engaged in finalising administrative formalities on how these standards has to be notified either through the Energy Conservation Act or the Motor Vehicles Act. The Environment minister said as the transport sector contributes about 15 to 20 per cent of the total greenhouse gas emissions in India, it is being debated within the government how it should be done. At present, transport sector is placed at number three after the power and agriculture sector as far as the national emissions are concerned.Mr. Ramesh said by 2011, it will be mandatory for automobile manufacturers to sell vehicles with energy-efficiency tags, adding the information on the labels will have to be certified by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. Earlier, addressing the confrence, Minister of Heavy industries and Public Enterprises Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh said that there will not be any drastic increase in tax on the Hybrid vehicles soon to be introduced in India. He said fuel efficiency regulations would be incorporated to maintain a check on emissions of carbon dioxide.
