The government is setting up a high-powered committee to implement the interlinking of rivers as directed by the Supreme Court. River interlinking proposals in the country envisage increased use of ground water and generation of thirty-five thousand MW of power besides creating irrigation facilities from surface water in 25 million hectares of land. The other benefits are flood control, navigation facilities, water supply and pollution control. Interlinking of rivers will also help in overcoming drought. Water Resources Minister Harish Rawat gave this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
