Govt sets up panel to prepare action plan to make Ganga pollution free

Government has set up a committee of secretaries to prepare an action plan to make Ganga pollution free and explore the possibilities of promoting tourism and transportation in it. The committee will be headed by Secretary of Water Resources Ministry and Secretaries of Power, Tourism and Shipping Ministries will be its members.

Briefing reporters after the first meeting of Inter-ministerial group on Ganga in New Delhi today, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the group will submit its report within one month and thereafter a final action plan will be presented before the cabinet. He said, inland waterways will be developed from Varanasi to Hubli for transportation in Ganga. Mr. Gadkari said ethics, economy and ecology will be the top priority in implementing these projects.

Water Resources Minister, Uma Bharti who was also present in the press conference, said that the proposed action plan will also be implemented on other rivers in the country.
