Govt sets up Chambal Sanctuary Management Committee

The Centre has set up a National Tri-State Chambal Sanctuary Management and Coordination Committee to protect the aquatic animals in the Chambal river.

Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh look after the project in their respective jurisdiction.

As per the latest information, there are 870 gharials, 301 mugger and 69 river dolphin in the Chambal Sanctuary.

Illegal fishing, habitat destruction due to sand mining, poaching of animals for skin trade and pollution in the river are among the major threats faced by the animals in the river sanctuary.

This was stated by the Minister of Environment and Forests, Mrs. Jayanthi Natarajan in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
