Buoyed by seafood exports crossing 2.8 billion US dollar mark in 2010-11, the government on Friday said it has set a target of 4 billion US dollar for this fiscal. According to an official release, citing figures from Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), the Commerce Ministry said in dollar terms the country's seafood exports grew 33.95 per cent in 2010-11. During the fiscal seafood exports aggregated to 8,13,091 tonnes, a growth of 19.85 per cent in quantity from the previous fiscal. It said, the growth was amidst the scenario of continuing recession in the international markets, debt crisis in EU economies, continuing anti dumping duty in US, the sluggish growth in US economy and political instability in the Arab world. Frozen Shrimp was the major export value item accounting for 44.17 per cent of the total earnings, followed by shrimp.
