Govt sets 12% growth target in tourism sect by 2016

Government has set a target of achieving 12 percent growth in tourism sector by the year 2016. The growth will help to generate 25 million additional jobs in the country. This was stated by Tourism Minister, Subodh Kant Sahai while inaugurating the Indian Pavilion in tourism fair in Berlin.

According to an official release, Mr. Sahai said that tourism ministry has taken concrete steps to increase tourist traffic in the country in the coming years. He said that an Inter Ministerial Coordination Committee has been set up to facilitate resolution of issues involved in the development of tourism sector. He said that tourism is a major engine for economic growth and India has potential market for the sector.

The minister said that the sector has registered 11.8 percent growth in foreign tourist arrivals in the country during the year 2010.
