Expressing concern over rising pollution levels in the Ganga, the Centre has urged public co-operation to keep the river clean. Talking to newspersons at a function at National Academy of Sciences in Allahabad, Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said, concerted efforts are needed to check pollution in the Ganga. He said, the government is doing its bit, but there is need to make people aware of their duty to keep the river clean and to prevent serious economic and ecological consequences that may affect millions of lives. He said the government is aware of serious damages being caused to the river due to discharge of effluents from tanneries and other industrial units in places like Kanpur and effective steps will be taken to curb this activity.
