Government says the scheme of direct cash transfer under various welfare schemes will usher in a new revolution in the country. Addressing a workshop on cash transfer in New Delhi today, Rural Development minister Jairam Ramesh, said it will also eliminate corruption by intermediaries. On the charges leveled by some civil society members that the cash transfer under the scheme is bribe, the minister said it is a bogus and ludicrous argument.
Saying that the current system of delivery is not working properly, he also rejected the notion that the scheme would abdicate government's commitment to welfare state. Mr Ramesh said, the scheme will rather make the welfare state more efficient by rooting out corruption being practiced by an army of incompetent and insensitive intermediaries.
