Govt says it has taken several steps to promote sports in country

The government today said it has taken several steps to promote sports in the country. Replying to supplementaries in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is implementing Target Olympic Podium Scheme for targeted athletes having potential of winning medals in Olympics. He said, under it, financial assistance and training facilities are being provided to the athletes for preparation in the games. He said, the Ministry has also launched a Kehlo India programme for the development of sports. The scheme provides for financial assistance for setting up of multipurpose indoor halls to improve sports infrastructure and facilities in various states. Mr Rijiju also informed the House that the government has allocated 116 crore rupees for National Sports Development Fund. The Fund aims at promoting sports in general and specific disciplines to enable individual sports persons for achieving excellence at the National and International levels.
