Govt. says, bumper Kharif crop following good monsoon

The government says, there will be a bumper Kharif crop following good monsoon. In a brief chat with AIR correspondent, the Agriculture Secretary P.K. Basu said, output estimates for the crop will be available by the mid of this month. He however said it is not possible to predict whether the output will surpass the previous record of 121 million tonnes achieved in 2007-08 Kharif season. He said widespread rain this month is expected to help farmers in Punjab and Haryana to increase the ground water level. He said the rain will also improve Rabi crop prospects because of increased moisture content in the soil. Wheat and mustard are the major Rabi crops in Punjab and Haryana besides western districts of Uttar Pradesh. Mr. Basu also noted that September rain will also result in high water levels in most major reservoirs of the country.
